European Waste Codes

Search for waste codes EUWAS offers the service to search the list of wastes of the EUWAS partner countries as well as the European list of waste in English. You have two options to search for waste code numbers and waste code descriptions.On the one hand, you can directly navigate through the whole list (starting with the main chapter, next sub-chapter etc.) by clicking on the chapter names.

On the other hand, you enter a search term like "metal" into the free-text search. The results will be the search hits. You can also enter a waste code number like 20 01 33* (please enter the spaces between the numbers) to find the corresponding waste description.

Below this text, you will find the list of wastes of the European Union. Please change the country (drop-down-menu on the top of the right hand side of the portal) to access the lists of wastes of the EUWAS countries. Please note that the lists of waste might be different as EU Member states are allowed to notify additional waste number codes. This has been done by Poland and Estonia, so you might not find all waste codes in all countries.

Background

The lists of wastes are a unified basis for the classification of wastes in the EU. It is also important for waste statistics and for waste transports (waste transport directive). The list of waste is valid for all wastes (wastes for disposal and waste for recovery). The lists of waste contain also hazardous waste and criteria for dangerous wastes. If the waste fulfils at least one criterion for danger, it is considered to be hazardous. Hazardous wastes are marked with a star "*". The types of waste are divided into 20 chapters, whereby each chapter is characterised by two main item numbers. These chapters are divided into different groups of wastes, which are characterised by two further item numbers. An individual type of waste within a group is clearly marked by further two numbers, so that each waste has a six-digit key.
